Cognitive Inertia
The mental resistance to learning new patterns, which increases with age, expertise, and stakes.
Cognitive inertia is the energy required to learn a new mental model. It is higher for experts (who have deeply internalized the old model), higher for high-stakes jobs (where mistakes are costly), and higher for older users (who have more entrenched habits). Products that require users to rethink their entire workflow face massive cognitive inertia. Products that slot into existing mental models face less. The key design principle: minimize the number of new concepts a user must learn before making progress.
