Emotional Safety

The user's confidence that they can experiment, make mistakes, and recover without negative consequences.

Emotional safety is the feeling that the product environment is forgiving — that mistakes can be undone, that help is available, and that the user won't be judged or penalized for not knowing. It is a critical but invisible dimension of UX. Products with high emotional safety have undo buttons, autosave, clear error messages, and gentle onboarding. Products with low emotional safety make users fear experimentation, which limits adoption and discovery. Emotional safety is especially important in AI-native products where users worry about generating wrong or embarrassing outputs.
