Job Story

The Emotional Layer

The dimension of a job concerned with how the user wants to feel while getting the job done — confident, in control, creative, safe.

The emotional layer is one of the three layers of any job to be done. It answers the question: how do I want to feel while doing this work? Do I want to feel competent and in control? Creative and inspired? Safe and supported? Products that design for the emotional layer don't just deliver functional outcomes; they deliver emotional states. ChatGPT won because it made users feel smart and capable, not just because it generated text. Products that ignore the emotional layer may deliver results but leave users anxious, frustrated, or alienated.
