Job Story
The Functional Layer
The dimension of a job concerned with the practical outcome the user needs — the task, deliverable, or result.
The functional layer is the most visible dimension of any job: what does the user need to get done? Send an email, analyze data, create a design, schedule a meeting. It is the layer most product teams focus on exclusively. But the functional layer is also the easiest to replicate. Competitors can build the same features, automate the same workflow, and deliver the same output. What differentiates products is how they serve the emotional and social layers alongside the functional. Products that win on function alone are in a race to the bottom. Products that win on all three layers build defensible positions.
