The Screen Test: Does Your Product Deliver What You Promised?
Your marketing says "stop missing deadlines." Your landing page shows a team in control. Your ad copy speaks to the — scattered work, missed handoffs, the weekly status hunt.
The user clicks through. Signs up. They're motivated. Something in their world isn't working and your marketing spoke to it.
Then they land on a screen that says "Create your first workspace."
The marketing spoke to their struggle. The first screen is asking them to build a container they've never heard of. And the user — who arrived with urgency and a gut-level feeling that this product might help — now has to figure out what a "workspace" is before they can find out if they were right.
That gap between what brought the user here and what they see when they arrive is one of the most important things you can test in product research. It tells you whether the promise your positioning makes is the same promise the product keeps.
An Expensive Gap
The gap matters more than you might think, and the reason is neurological.
Behavioral science describes two modes of thinking that matter here. System 1 is fast, automatic, and runs below conscious awareness. System 2 is slow, deliberate, and effortful — it evaluates trade-offs and weighs risks.
When a user arrives from a marketing page, System 1 has already been primed. The ad spoke to their struggle. System 1 formed a gut-level hypothesis: "this is the thing that helps me with ___." That's the reason they signed up.
If the first screen confirms that hypothesis — the language matches, the structure feels relevant, the signal is clear — System 1 stays in charge. The user moves forward with purpose. Kahneman calls this cognitive ease: things that are easy to process feel safe and trustworthy.
If the first screen contradicts the hypothesis — unfamiliar jargon, empty states, too many options with no clear relevance — System 2 gets recruited. System 2 starts asking questions the user wasn't asking before: "What is this actually? Is this going to be complicated? Maybe I should look at alternatives."
Every one of those questions is an exit opportunity because the first screen created cognitive strain instead of ease.
This is why first-screen alignment isn't a nice-to-have. A mismatch doesn't just confuse users. It activates the part of the brain that's designed to second-guess decisions — at the exact moment you need the user to keep moving.
The Test
The question you're testing: does the expectation the marketing created match what the first screen communicates? You can run this with a handful of users in thirty minutes or less.
Show each user your landing page or the marketing asset that would have brought them to the product. Ask: "Based on what you just saw, what do you think this product helps you do?" Write down their answers. That's the hiring hypothesis — the expectation the marketing created.
Then show them the first screen of the actual product. After ten seconds, ask: "Does this match what you expected?" Then watch them use it for two or three minutes.
You're looking for one thing: does the first screen confirm the hypothesis or break it?
When it confirms, the user moves with purpose. They know what they're looking for. Their first actions are directed toward the marketing described. They might not know exactly where everything is, but they know what they're trying to do.
When it breaks, you see rummaging. The user clicks the sidebar like a junk drawer. They open settings. They poke templates. They create something they don't understand because creating feels like forward motion. They search in the first thirty seconds — trying to supply label the screen didn't provide.
Rummaging looks like exploration in session recordings. It's not. It's the user trying to figure out what the product is for — because the first screen didn't continue the conversation the marketing started.
What Creates the Gap
The mismatch between positioning and first screen usually comes from one of three places.
The marketing speaks 's language but the product speaks its own. The landing page says "see what's at risk before it surprises you." The product says "Create a project." Two different languages — one is about the user's situation, the other is about the product's model. The user came for visibility into risk. The product is asking them to build a container they don't understand yet.
The marketing promises an outcome but the first screen requires setup without any connection to value. The user showed up because the ad showed a team in control. The product shows an empty dashboard with placeholder text. The marketing showed the after. The product shows the before-the-before. The user has to imagine the value instead of seeing it — and imagination is effortful, skeptical, System 2 work at the exact moment you need System 1's quick trust.
The product serves multiple jobs but the marketing spoke to one. The ad targeted people who need project visibility. But the first screen is generic — "All your work, in one place" — because the product also serves task management, collaboration, and document organization. The user who came for visibility can't find themselves in the first screen because it's trying to speak to everyone at once.
What a Good First Screen Does
Linear's first screen works because it doesn't make the user think about what Linear is. The marketing says "streamline issues, sprints, and product roadmaps." The product opens to a clean, focused interface that looks like the work the user came to do — issues, organized, with clear status. The language matches. The structure matches. The hypothesis is confirmed in seconds.
When the first screen aligns with the promise, three things are true:
It speaks the language , not the product. Not "Create a new project" or "Set up your workspace." 's language sounds like the situation: "See what needs your attention." "Find out where things stand." When the first screen uses the user's words for the user's situation, the System 1 is happy.
It shows what looks like. An empty state with placeholder text asks the user to imagine the value. A populated example — a dashboard with real-looking , a report with actual content — shows them. Users need to see what looks like to believe the product can deliver it. Emptiness reads as labor, not flexibility.
It makes the first move obvious and safe. A first screen with too many options and no clear starting point creates anxiety at the exact moment the user is most vulnerable. They don't know the product. They don't know if clicking something is reversible. One clear path to one meaningful step toward — not a catalog of everything the product can do.
When the Product Serves Multiple Jobs
Multi-job products stay vague on the first screen because vagueness feels inclusive. "The platform for modern teams." "Create, collaborate, and ship."
For first-time users, vagueness isn't inclusive. It's work. The user has to figure out which of the product's capabilities is relevant to them — and that's the the first screen shouldn't create.
If your product serves multiple jobs, the first screen should provide a situational fork that mirrors the language your marketing uses:
"What brought you here today?"
"I need to see where a project stands." "I need to get approval on something." "I need to organize scattered work." "I need to share with someone."
Each option maps to a job. When the user picks one, the product can reorganize around that job — delivering a first screen that confirms the hypothesis instead of overwhelming it with everything the product can do. The fork should mirror the language your marketing used, because the user expects the product to continue the conversation the marketing started.
The Standard
Your first screen is doing its job when a new user can explain the product to someone else after sixty seconds:
"This is for when ___, and it helps me ___, so that ___."
If they can fill in those blanks — and if those blanks match what the marketing told them before they signed up — the hypothesis formed and confirmed. They know what the product is for. They know when to come back. They know what job they'd hire it to do.
If they can't, the problem might not be the first screen at all. It might be a mismatch between what the marketing promised and what the product delivers. That's an alignment problem. And the first-screen test is how you find it.
