Repeatedly asking 'why' to move from surface symptoms to the underlying job the user is trying to get done.
The 5 Whys in JTBD is not a root cause analysis for bugs. It's a progressive drilling-down from what the user says they want to the job they're actually trying to get done. Each 'why' should move from feature request to functional need to emotional need to social need. By the fifth why, you should be at the level of progress: what would make this person feel successful, competent, and safe in front of their colleagues?
