Job Story
The Social Layer
The dimension of a job concerned with how the user is perceived by others, and how the product affects their social standing.
The social layer is one of the three layers of any job to be done, alongside the functional and emotional layers. It answers the question: how will using this product make me look to others? Will it make me seem competent, innovative, or professional? Or will it make me look outdated, overwhelmed, or out of touch? Products that solve the social job signal status, competence, and belonging. Products that ignore the social job may be functionally superior but socially embarrassing to adopt. Understanding the social layer is critical for B2B products where adoption is visible and career stakes are high.
