Job Story

User Story vs. Job Story

The fundamental difference between persona-based requirements and context-based requirements.

A user story says: 'As a [persona], I want [feature], so that [benefit].' A job story says: 'When [situation], I want to [motivation], so I can [outcome].' The difference is everything. User stories assume the persona predicts behavior. Job stories know that context predicts behavior. User stories keep the product team focused on features. Job stories keep them focused on progress. User stories justify what you already planned to build. Job stories reveal what you should build.
