Variable Reward

An unpredictable reward schedule that creates stronger habit formation than consistent rewards.

Variable rewards are unpredictable outcomes that create anticipation and dopamine spikes. Social media feeds, slot machines, and Duolingo's streak system all use variable rewards. The unpredictability makes the reward more compelling than a guaranteed one, because the brain treats uncertainty as a puzzle to solve. In product design, variable rewards can drive engagement—but they can also create addiction-like behaviors that users later resent.
